Best Irish pub in Liverpool

"McCooley's Mathew Street" in Liverpool, England, is an impressive example of a modern Irish pub, distinguished by its size, versatility, and vibrant atmosphere. It is part of a small chain with another location in the city and has established itself as one of the largest Irish pubs in Liverpool, particularly on the famous Mathew Street, known for its proximity to the Cavern Quarter and its role as a tourist attraction. The pub caters to a wide audience—from sports fans and music lovers to families—who seek a blend of traditional pub experience and entertainment.

Modern Irish cuisine Liverpool

The menu is heavily inspired by Irish cuisine and features homemade dishes prepared fresh daily. A highlight is the "Full Irish Breakfast," a hearty meal with crispy bacon, sausages, fried eggs, and black pudding, which perfectly kickstarts the day with its savoriness. For the main course, the "Chicken Stack" stands out—juicy chicken stacked with sides and a spicy sauce that impresses both in flavor and presentation. The "Overload Spice Box" is also popular, a spicy mix of fried delights that is particularly favored by guests craving something with a kick. Sweet treats like the "Cookie Dough Skillet," a warm dessert with soft dough and melted chocolate, round out the offerings and provide a delightful conclusion.

Pub with live music Liverpool

The ambiance of McCooley's Mathew Street is unique, extending over several floors, each with its own character. The decor combines classic Irish elements—such as wall decorations with typical knick-knacks—with modern accents like large screens and pool tables. Especially on weekends, the pub transforms into a party zone with live bands playing traditional Irish music and DJ sets creating a lively atmosphere. The numerous HD TVs and projectors also make it a hotspot for sports fans who can watch important games in good company. The outdoor area offers a welcome change and invites relaxation, while the various seating options—from cozy nooks to high bar stools—provide flexibility and comfort.

Authentic pub experience Liverpool

The drink selection is as diverse as it is impressive. In addition to a wide range of lagers, stouts, and craft beers, there are cocktails inspired by Irish stories, such as a fruity drink with a hint of whiskey. The staff is known for their friendliness and attentiveness, with quick service during busy times being particularly noted—though there may be small delays during peak hours. The opportunity to enjoy food and drinks over several hours makes the pub a place where one can easily spend an entire day.

Very good pint of Guinness. £4 during the day on Happy Hour. Live music on pretty much throughout the day. Plenty of tv screens - I’ve showing Sky Sports News, the other live sport on another Sky channel. Very good Irish breakfast menu but doesn’t open till 10am.

Great bar to watch the Premier League - was disappointed they only had 1 of the 3 weekday matches on though. We asked several times to put the other 2 on and the server said she was trying. The server was very nice but clearly had to cover too many tables so came to us infrequently and didn’t come to us for the first time for about 30 minutes.

It was a great night out! It is an amazing place to have a drink whilst listening to live music! The atmosphere was cheerful as there was a football game going on and it allowed us to experience the true spirit of Liverpool. Thanks!

Tried to have a drink in here on a Monday night. I like live and loud music, but it was unbelievable how loud they had the music on. Even shouting, we couldn't hear each other. The bar had also ran out of Guinness too, and no lemonade. Stayed for one drink, but couldn't wait to leave.

This was the meeting point for the Bayer 04 Leverkusen fans ahead of our Champions League match against Liverpool back in November 2024. By late afternoon the place was teeming with singing fans who had long since spilled out onto the street outside. This place is certainly big and they were doing a roaring trade in beer and food. I appreciated the good nature of the staff and bouncers and all went smoothly until we began our long march up to Anfield. All good.

Nice looking pub, but don't let the interior fool you. This place is infested with toxicity coming from bar staff and waiting staff. Gossipy staff members, weird, judgemental stares and passive aggressive service. Felt very uncomfortable in this place. It's clear from the staff that management has no idea how to create a good working environment behind the scenes. Which means paranoia, gossip, aggression and general toxicity are passed onto delivery staff and then onto the customer. Avoid.

This place really is hit and miss. Service was as slow as Tuesday, pints I thought were pricey except during happy hours. Plenty of screens for matches.
